[item]Pharmacies Fail to Warn Consumers of Potentially Fatal Drug Interactions

More than half the pharmacies tested in a 1996 survey did not warn consumers that the prescriptions they were filling could, if taken together, be dangerous or even deadly. Pharmacists should have either given counseling, offered to call the doctor or refused to fill the prescriptions.

The results, published by US News and World Report, indicate geography plays a role in how likely it was that a consumer would receive the vital information. In some cities, half the pharmacists failed to raise alarm, while in others, virtually all either refused to fill the prescription or did so with stern warnings.

Written warnings, when they were included, were often insufficiently detailed.

Consumers need to take the admonition to "consult with your physician if you are taking other drugs" seriously. Simple over-the-counter medications can, if taken in combination with other drugs, have life-altering effects.
