The laboratory is staffed by Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. During the typical initial evaluation, patients undergo an office-based evaluation by one of the physicians who specialize in sleep disorders. The evaluation may include an interview, review of sleep/wake logs and other inventories, a physical examination, or other procedures. Following this comprehensive evaluation, consultations with a permanent consultant may be requested, or sleep laboratory or other tests scheduled. Once a diagnosis is conclusively established, a treatment plan is formulated. Treatment modalities are numerous and include medication, breathing devices, orthognathic devices, surgery, sleep/wake schedule re-alignment, emotional couseling, and others.

The Sleep Disorders Centre of Metropolitan Toronto was established almost a decade ago and is currently one of Canada's oldest and largest free-standing (community-based) medical facilities devoted exclusively to the evaluation and management of the broad range of sleep-wake disorders. The Centre offers comprehensive care for all sleep disorders, as well as continuity of care from initial consultation through to diagnosis, treatment, patient education and follow-up.
Canada has a publicly-funded ("socialized") health care system, and, for those eligible, defined medically necessary services offered by the Centre are fully covered by Canadian provincial health insurance plans. The Centre frequently serves patients from areas outside of the province of Ontario.
The Centre currently operates an eight-bed sleep laboratory for the definitive diagnosis of physiological sleep disturbances and CPAP titration for sleep apnea.
Other programs offered at the Centre include workshops on sleep hygiene and relaxation training, conducted by registered clinical psychologists and other allied health professionals.
The Centre's technical staff include a dedicated quality management director, senior registered polysomnographic technologists, registered EEG technologists and registered respiratory therapists.
The Centre's activities outside of clinical medical practice include public education and health promotion, and consultation to the medical-legal and insurance industries, as well as to corporations interested in the effects of sleep-wake disorders on health, safety and productivity.
