of the layers -- like geological strata --, of "stuff" beneath a Manhattan street: the electric conduits layer,
the telephone wires layer, the subways layer, etc. Finally, just above bedrock, was:
the lost cat toys layer.
From a National Film Board of Canada animated film about fire safety: There is a house fire, and everyone properly exits the building. But the cat stops just outside the door, for a moment, explaining (I quote from imperfect memory): "I think I will see if I can catch myself a mouse flambú."
