[ Light :: Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA :: Louis Kahn ]
"...Light is really the source of all being.... [A]ll material in nature, the mountains and the streams and the air and we, are made of Light which has been spent, and this crumpled mass called material casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to Light."(Lobell, p.22)
Notes: I thought about trimming this picture to remove the material at each side, to give the illusion that my picture was a direct photograph of Kahn's Salk Institute for Biological Studies (1959-66, La Jolla, California), and not a picture of a picture in a [House and Garden, ca. 1990] magazine. But I decided against this, on principle of truthfulness, and also because I like what looks somewhat like a Torah scroll roll at left side, and a piece of a Clyfford Still painting at right side.

The city is the place of availabilities. It is the place where a small boy, as he walks through it, may see something that will tell him what he wants to do his whole life....
[ ]
The measure of the greatness of a place to live must come from the character of its institutions, sanctioned by their sensitivity to desire for new agreement, not by need, because need comes from what already is. Desire is the thing not made, the roots of the will to live. (--Lobell, pp.44-5)
