A Bill to amend the Social Security Act to provide individuals with disabilities with incentives to become economically self-sufficient is now before the Senate Finance Committee.

Known as the Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1998, if enacted Social Security Disability (SSDI) would become more like Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

When consumers on SSI earn money, their benefits decrease in proportion to the amount of money earned. (see our Financial Page for details).   Consumers on SSDI can earn up to $499 a month, but $500 a month is defined as "substantial gainful employment" ... and all benefits are lost at once.
