Summer's Here--Time for CPE!
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." --W.B. Yeats

It's that time of the year again when business slows to a more manageable level and professional staff can start to think about how and where to get the continuing professional education (CPE) hours they need to meet their minimum professional requirements. While many firms offer in-house seminars and programs on a variety of technical and industry-specific topics, or send staff off to large training conferences, you might want to consider lower-cost alternatives, such as self-taught CD-ROM or video options.
Many university business schools offer summer "Executive" programs, typically two-weeks long, that cover management and business basics. Well-known and lesser-known consulting groups provide specialized training programs. It is even possible to attend the private training programs of the Big Six firms and larger law firms under the right circumstances.
Staying on top of the latest technical developments in the profession is the the primary importance of CPE for partners and professional staff. Yet "soft" courses like marketing and interpersonal skills development and selling are equally important in today's competitive marketplace. When you plan the programs you will offer your staff this year, consider the not-so-obvious and give your professionals the chance to stretch in a new direction. Here are a few links to get you thinking about whether to consider a CD-ROM based program this year or next.
