Good Internet Information Search Engines

These sites are excellent for searching on specific topics you may be writing about at the moment.  Be warned...turn off your browser's ``auto-load images" if you don't want to be deluged with slow loads and advertisements shouting at you!

  • Starting Point.  Choose your own search engine according to what you are searching for.  Live searches here for all major search engines. Good starting point.
  • Hotbot.  Winner of PC Computing's Search Engine test. Great key word research tool and a definite bookmark. Often more accessible than AltaVista or Yahoo.
  • Northern Light.  A new favorite.  Uses folders on the left margin to help you refine your search. Searches multiple engines.
  • Profusion.  Another new favorite.  Created by the University of Kansas.
  • AltaVista.  A definite bookmark for research. Key word searches of everything on the Web. (read the Advanced Help to make searching more effective)
  • Yahoo! The classic resource for locating Net sites on many topics. Not a key word search engine, but a hierarchical index. A definite bookmark, but sometimes busy and hard to reach.
  • Lycos: Catalog of the Internet  A very good resource. Check its Picture and Audio search sections.
  • Open Text/Live Link.  Scroll past a long list of back-patting to get to the search engine.  It's a good one.
  • December's List of Internet Resources  One of the originals.  More of a directory.
  • Gopher Jewels Collection of worthwhile and interesting sites.
