Business and Technical Associations

The following organizations are more likely to be of interest to professional business and technical writers, although many have special membership categories for students. Some have specific requirements for membership, such as a certain number of years of experience in the profession or a certain number of publications.  Choose a category and jump to it:

Business Communications

International Association of Business Communicators
IABC is a worldwide organization of approximately 13,000 communicators in more than 45 countries. From its international headquarters in San Francisco, IABC provides professional development, consultation and support to members through local chapters, district regions, and international conferences (1998's will be in New Orleans in June). They provide information on positions available, perform research on timely issues and topics related to communications, and offer a professional accreditation program. Student memberships available.

IABC Hyperspace
IABC also maintains an online presence in IABC Hyperspace,  a section in the PR & Marketing SIG on Compuserve. The message base and library are open to all. At the Compuserve prompt type GO IABC.

Society for Technical Communication
STC is the largest organization serving the technical communication profession.

American Medical Writers Association

Writers

National Writers Union
The National Writers' Union was established to provide professional writers with a powerful group voice in dealings with publishers. Through it's national office in New York City, the NWU provides job referrals and information to help writers secure the best possible contracts and payment terms from publishers. NWU maintains a job hotline for members and is a sub-group of the UAW.  They can be reached by E-mail at nwu@netcom.com.

International Women Writers' Guild
The IWWG is an international support network primarily of women writers. A bimonthly newsletter, group travel and a week-long annual writers' conference help members to stay informed about the activities of other members and provide important skill development. IWWG's brand new home page contains a wealth of downloadable information written by members on various aspects of writing.

The Authors Registry
Nonprofit organization with royalty collection and distribution service, licensing service and large contact directory for authors.

National Writers Association
Association for free lance writers.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc.
Sponsors of the SFWA Nebula Awards for best published science fiction. Encourages public interest in science fiction literature.

American Marketing Association
The AMA offers many programs and publications for the professional communicator.

Public Relations

Public Relations Society of America
PRSA is one of the largest professional associations for public relations practitioners in the world. Its electronic message base is available through the PR & Marketing SIG on Compuserve (GO PRSIG)

International Public Relations Association
IPRA is the largest public relations association in the world and may be reached through the PR & Marketing SIG on Compuserve by typing GO PRSIG at the CIS prompt.
