Useful Applications for an Intranet

If your company is like 80% of the larger companies in the world, you already have or are planning an Intranet.  Intranets are private organizationwide networks like WANs, and, they use Internet web technology to help make information more widely available to all.  Here are some interesting applications companies have used on their Intranets:

  • telephone and email directories
  • job openings
  • live, online conferencing
  • bulletin board message forums and discussion areas (organized by topic or affinity)
  • catalogs of office supplies and online order placement
  • departmental web sites and information
  • "business card" business and personal web pages for all employees
  • online library catalog
  • new hire orientation and training programs
  • employee benefits manuals and forms
  • time and expense forms
  • marketing and sales information
  • local office newsletters
  • daily headline news (both worldwide and organizational)
  • computer help desk and support functions
  • personal classified ads

If your company is providing an interesting service or is using the intranet in an interesting way, reply to this message and let me know about it!
